Berkeley has a Weak Mayor form of a Mayor-Council government.
Daily operations are the responsibility of the City Manager, who reports to the City Council over which the Mayor presides. Each of Berkeley's eight districts elects a representative member to the Council.
The Council recently (Nov 2018) approved a framework for streaming legislative workflow. The result is a set of standing Policy Committees.
The Berkeley Unified School District Board is elected separately and has separate funding sources as well as the ability to put its own bond measures onto voter ballots.
Other elected officials include the City Auditor and the Rent Stabilization Board.
